August Plant Tips
- Harvest herbs before they flower to preserve flavor.
- Onions are ready to harvest when the stems bend and turn brown.
- Watch tomatoes for blight – brown spots on leaves can quickly spread.
- Plant cool-weather veggies like kale, lettuce and spinach.
- Fertilize and deadhead roses, annuals and container plants for continuous blooms.
- Divide and transplant iris and daylilies after blooming.
- Apply grub control to prevent lawn damage this fall and next spring.
- Keep mower blades sharp and set to 2.5-3 inches.
- Seed lawns in late August as temperatures cool.
- Water early morning to help foliage dry and reduce disease risk.
- Continue to weed to keep the task manageable.
- Check houseplants for insects and disease.
